Be on the Lookout for these Bikers!

Many people don't know this but when I'm not getting geeky about the brain, I have a side hustle. Okay, maybe not exactly a side hustle... more of a passion. And this is how I got all up close and personal with a bunch of bikers.

I work with foster kids as a Guardian ad Litem. As a GAL, I am for the child who has been removed from his or her parents due to physical, sexual, emotional abuse and neglect.  My primary role is to be a voice for them in court and advocate for their needs. It is an awesome responsibility, often challenging and even frustrating at times. But sharing my time and energy as a GAL has been one of the most rewarding experiences of my life.

The old saying, "it takes a village to raise a child" couldn't be more true. The GAL organization  works with the Department of Children and Families, foster families and other community organizations. One of those organizations is Bikers Against Child Abuse, Inc. (B.A.C.A.). B.A.C.A.  is a non-profit international organization that exists to empower children who have been victimized physically, sexually or emotionally. They are dedicated to the principle that a basic right of childhood is safety and security and that no child should live in fear. They work in conjunction with local and state officials to send a clear message to the perpetrator that the child is part of the BACA family and they will stand ready to protect them from further abuse or intimidation.

I've had the privilege of watching this group in action with one of my kids.  I am convinced that it was because of BACA that she found the courage to face her abuser and testify against him in court. Check out the video below to learn more about them, but hear me when I say to you that these people are heroes for the most vulnerable among us.

We all have causes that are dear to our hearts. Protecting children is that cause for me. As we approach the holidays when many of us decide upon charities to support, I hope you'll consider B.A.C.A. You can donate at bacaworld.org.

Or, if you'd like to contribute specifically to the upcoming fundraiser for the City of Palms chapter, email me at melissa@andrickgroup.com.  It would be my great privilege to share your contribution with the rockstars who protected my kiddo down here in SWFL.

Not all heroes wear capes.

Some wear BACA cuts.
