When was the last time you intentionally went in search of something cool, unique or thought-provoking? What if you made that part of your daily routine? Every day, seek and find three cool things. It's kind of crazy what you can find!A while back, I wrote a Neuro Nugget about the power of optimism. The research is very clear about the positive impact optimism has on depression, mental illness, stress, anxiety, physical health and even professional success. If we're in the market for negativity, that is going to influence the way we see everything around us. Conversely, if we are actively seeking out the good stuff, we'll see the world in a much more positive light. And that positivity has enormous power.
That old saying, “What we find depends upon what we look for” is so true! If you begin each day with the intention of looking for good things, you’ll see good things you might have otherwise missed. And on the really tough days, the good things are even more powerful.
“What we do see depends mainly on what we look for. ... In the same field the farmer will notice the crop, the geologists the fossils, botanists the flowers, artists the colouring, sportmen the cover for the game. Though we may all look at the same things, it does not all follow that we should see them.”
― John Lubbock, The Beauties of Nature and the Wonders of the World We Live in
Recently, I sat down with Jeff Ikler, leadership consultant, career coach and host of the podcast Getting Unstuck. We discussed this idea of paying attention to what you pay attention to and how it fits perfectly into nurturing your curiosity. Check out our conversation and then give it a try. Commit to finding three cool things today. Then, let us know what they are. I added mine in the photos below.
I'm fortunate to live in SWFL where the sun shines most days and the nature around me is gorgeous. I've made it part of my daily routine to find three cool things every day. It's really amazing what I've found when I'm intentional about paying attention to the world around me - from alligators to rainbows and armadillos to woodpeckers.
I challenge you to find three cool things today and come back here to share your findings with us. I promise you, you won't regret it!
