What Makes Us more Attractive to Others?

How do you define beauty?  What makes someone attractive – or unattractive? Attraction is an incredibly personal issue. Even though we all have a unique profile of what makes someone attractive, studies show there are some universal markers of attractiveness. Smiling and perceived kindness and intelligence make us more attractive. When it comes to physical features, taller men are typically viewed more attractive than shorter men, while a low waist-hip ratio is reliably found attractive in women. Facial hair, tattoos, eye color, and sense of style can all influence whether or not we find someone more attractive or not.

Some factors are harder to identify like vocal qualities and features that resemble our opposite-sex parents (but that’s only for heterosexual attraction). Smell may be the most complex factor in physical attraction because the nose can make complex determinations like sexual compatibility that the conscious mind is completely unaware of.

The bottom line is beauty is complicated.

Studies show that the way we show up in the world has more to do with how attractive others find us than physical characteristics.

Here are the top 4 essential traits of people who are beautiful from the inside out:

1. Beautiful people are genuine. They are authentic and honest about who they are. They aren't trying to be someone else and they are comfortable in their own skin.

2. Beautiful people are curious. They love to learn new things, meet new people and discover new things about themselves.

3. Beautiful people are passionate about making positive ripples in the world. They recognize that each of us has the power to make a difference - big and small - in the life of another.

4. Beautiful people are grateful. They don't spend time and energy trying to determine whether the glass if half-full or half-empty. They are grateful for the glass.
